What is 3D stereo.
What is stereo pair and how 3D works:
Any 3D videos or stereo pair consists of 2 images of same picture with small difference to make 3D effect. This 3D effect appear because items we looking for have different angle for our both eyes (this effect called parallax
). So every eye see a little different picture. Thats why stereo videos has 2 pictures for our left and right eyes to make stereo effect. This usualy called stereo pair. Pictures adopted for angle with distance between our left and right eyes.
Types of 3D.
The most popular type of 3D is horizontal stereo pair but there is more types such as vertical stereo pair
picture. Every of this has a little different realization but it keep show us 2 pictures for every eye.
This is special type of getting 3D effect with special digital coloring of picture. To see 3D effect you need to have special anaglyph glasses that have different colored eye glasses. Usualy left eye - red, right eye - blue. But there is more colors can be used like yellow-blue, green-magenta etc. Picture in this format recorded for example in red channel (left eye will see it) and blue channel (right eye will see it).
The biggest lack of this type of 3D content is not full colored image. You will loose 1 color channel for each eye and colors will be not so real.

Example of Anaglyph picture
This is another method of stereo 3D. It divides 1 frame to separate lines. 1 line for 1 eye and next line for other eye etc. So odds lines for left eye image and even for right eye image. So image loose half of its vertical size to make it 3D. This is realy rare format. Not many companies use this. Mostly for DVD 3D disks

Separated Stereo pair:
Both videos for each eyes divided to different independent steams. There is 2 types of this Separatefiles and Dualstream. Separatefiles - steams in separated files and Dualstream - steams included in 1 container.
Its easy to render this type of 3D but it can be troubles with syncronization of 2 different streams. This controls only by software that render this 3D video.

Blu-Ray 3D / SIFF:
This is newest of 3D formats. Can be writed to Bluray disk. As for format - its just other type of Separated stereo pair based on Dualstream type. Main difference is endoding codec MVC specialy developed for 3D encoding. So syncronization of 2 images provided not by software but by this codec. This is most perfect 3D stereo effect format
Its horizontal stereo pair. Images placed side by side left and next right. There is 2 types of sidebyside - differs just of starting image for left or for right eye. This format can be viewed even without glasses, you can try to see it by crossing your eyes.
Same as sidebyside but images placed not horizontaly but verticaly. Your software needs to understand this format to play it.
Example of OverUnder 3D
: This is subtype of SideBySide and OverUnder. Frames can be placed vertically or horizontally but quality will be reduced in 2 times. Frame will be reduced twice. This is not very good in qulity, maded for TV streaming.

How to watch 3D
To watch and play Anyglyph
you must have ANY type of monitor or TV and must have special anaglyph glasses with colors same as your video. There is lots of stores sell this type of glasses and you can make them even yourself

To watch and play any Stereo pair
you need to have special players, special type of monitor or TV and special glasses.
Monitor or TV:
must support 3D format and have 120Hz frequency. Now there is many major brands made this type of TVs or monitors. And many type of laptops now have 120Hz for 3D
You can play this on PC or media player but if its fullHD you need to have not less that 4 cores CPU and good video card to render this video. For less resolution its enough to have 2 cores CPU. Not all media players can play 3D formats too. Only in this year was maded special CPU for media players that can play fullHD 3D bluray discs.
Actualy you need to have supported only by your TV or monitor glasses. You can have it with TV package or buy it separately. But you must remember that you must have only same brand glasses as your TV. For example for Panasonic TV you must have only Panasonic 3D glasses and not Samsung 3D glasses (this will not works).
There is different solution to play 3D from PC - its NVidia 3D Vision Kit. If you have it you dont need to have glasses from TV brand (but TV still needs to be 120Hz to play 3D)
To watch 3D Bluray
you need actualy same as for Stereo pair but requirement for player hardware is more strict. Only powerfull players or special 3D Bluray players will play such type of 3D. For example there is Panasonic 3D bluray player as separated device that can easily play any 3D bluray disc.
If you play it from PC or laptop you need special software installed (see below) and good HDMI 1.4 cable
As for 3D player also can be used PlayStation 3 (PS3) with special firmware.

Simple player with advanced settings. Can play any type of stereo videos except 3D bluray image

Same as stereoscopic. NVidia bought some version of stereoscopic player and make it free for public
TotalMedia Theatre 5:
Can play almost all types of 3D content even 3D image but cant play 3D with streams separated by 2 files
CyberLink PowerDVD 10:
same abilities as TotalMedia Theatre 5
