Okay quick show of hands did anyone other than me comment on this topic that wasn't Indian? Funny and most importantly who in their right mind would even consider India a "Super Power" other than an Indian when it is barely getting along as a third world ghetto! Oh and thats not meant to be offensive, I'm just saying nobody considers India a super power!

I don't how many of you have actually studied Indian history, and no im not talking about the history which is proposed in the text books in the schools. I'm talking about the history which the present government is trying very hard to censor and block.

From the scandals of the Ghandi family to the Kashmir issue, the country is plagued with problems. When the British conquered the sub-continent and gave present day India its shape and form ( yes India didnt exist before the Brits) they also abolished the caste system, or tried to do so over the next couple of hundred of years. They introduced corruption, anyone who has studied British history knows how badly corrupt their system was in the past, thats why today most British colonies suffer from corrupt governments.

Now when the caste system was abolished, those working in the fields for the kings, who everyday got rewarded for what they did, ended up on the streets with nothing in their pockets. Todays 600 million people who live under the poverty line are mostly of the lower castes, and thier fate will never change. Whether there is an economic boom or God with a magic wand, reality will be very hard to change.

Comparing India to China is ridiculous. China is a dictatorship. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't got the whole picture. Look at whats happening in Tibet for example, the cencorship of the internet, the low human rights ( villages were *moved to build cities, people were treated like animals) .. there are to many economic interests that rely on China's low income and taxation systems. If you ask any economist about China's trade policy respect to Global rules, you will understand how Government subsidies increased their economy to what it is today. I guess Communism is good in keeping an eye on everything, but again where is your freedom?

The world makes such a big hue and cry about piracy, LoL and China is #1 when it comes to pirated goods, from electronics to clothes. People say oh wow look Chinese products are good and cheap, dont realise that those products have been ripped off some european designer and redone with sub-standard materials. 90% of chinese products would not pass quality control. Ofcourse the chinese make quality goods as well, I mean if china were to stop exporting to america today, the states would completely collapse..thats why its a 2-way game which will go on and on.

Now India on the other hand has been plagued with greed and corruption and this desire to compete on a national level. I mean if you look at individuals, Indians are al over the planet, from the guy who sells roses in europe to the 20% of Nasa's workforce. Plus all the high level doctors professors etc etc, but yes, all living and working outside India, and not for a better life, but for better professional posibilities.

With 1.2 billion people, compared to Europe's 800 million or the 400 million in america, numbers do make a difference. When Europe and America had their industrial revolutions and when they growth sky rocket, oil didnt cost $100 a barrel and there wasn't an economic global crises (which is the result of greed, credit borrowing in Europe and above all America) and there wasn't a thing called the Kyoto protocol(which america didnt give a fuck about for decades) ...today these new emerging powers (india-china-brazil-south africa-israel) have to face.

Everyone goes on about how wonderful life is abraod, i can tell you from experiance that, life is life. Its what you make of it that matters. Dont think that if you live abroad, *poof* things will be better. People suffer everywhere. Having a good car and god house doesn't mean that you're making money working 4 hours a day. Most of the american dream was built on credit purchases, just like Ireland and today they are feeling the crunch. Im sure if members from these areas comment they will be able to first hand comment on the quality of their lives in their areas.

Now back to India being a Super Power, are we talking economically? Her is great article from Forbes which talks about this, the *coming*(emerging) superpowers
Read the article carefully as it brings up some good points!

Yogi, i worked in india for 18 months training military personel. We were shown the usual lavish accomodations and were told not to exit the cities for our own safety, so we borrowed a jeep and went for a mooch about. Outside the cities limits, we came across nothing but poverty, starving kids and human beings struggling to cling onto life itself.
We raided our storage containers for tents, food and whatever we could grab (yeah, it was us that stripped out 11 USAF transit containers of MRE's (meals ready to eat) and went to play santa. Word soon got out about 'those crazy brits' who drove like nutters lobbing boxes of stuff out of the back of the wagons. A few days later whilst walking through the shacks, a young girl of about 10 stopped us and gave each one of us a roughly carved wooden elephant and said "you saved my brother with food" and scampered off. A nurse later told us that for our acts, we'd saved about 30 kids from starvation. Our bosses took a different view, we were fined 1200UK£ (months pay back then) but each of us got promoted and told where to find 'surplus' stuff. The USAF (us air force) bosses were of a different mind, they sent troops to reclaim the tents, turfing out the occupants and reclaiming their kit. But...no sooner had they repacked it all, we went and restole it along with their biege paint (mix with sand for a drag disguised look) and re delivered it all back to the same people it was taken back from.
Have to say it was fun to steal from the USAF, and i still have that little rough carved elephant to this day.

imouse i completely understand and appreciate what you did. What retards bosses are nowdays. I'm half Indian and lived in India for 4+15 years. I did my schooling there and also ended up playing football on e semi-professional level. I travelled quite extensively throughout the country, only not going to the East(Assam) North(Kashmir) West(Gujarat) ive been almost everywhere else, whether it was road trips or 3 day train journeys from south to north( pasport work, lol, i had to travel to Delhi by fucking train, and I used to live all the way on the south) .
Yes poverty, famine, suffering is widespread. Thats what im trying to say. Im' not saying India is booming with everyone cashing in. The development is happening, at quite a slow rate for those that it really matters. The government and the powers that be, seem to be catering to only those with money while allowing widespread poverty to remain. Some efforts are made, but nothing is ever concrete.

You cant compare India in no way to any country in the West. Thats a ridiculous way to judge or compare what that country is about. I mean I might be different to many, but I see this generation really having the means and ways to start the change. Youth organisations and NGO's are all over the country raising awareness ad trying to make a difference. The Government, as usual, seems to only be dealing with matters like foreign investment ad money money money, which goes nowhere towards development of society or construction of basic infrastructure.

Now once again I raise the fact of 1.2 billion. India being a democracy is quite transparent in terms of media freedom both national and foreign, yes some media is politically aligned but thats a global phenomenon. Western television is widespread for those who can afford it and that runs into millions. If you really trust me, the caste factor had a large role to play in todays alarming number of poor people. Land grabbing all caste related was something which happened in the past and those things are hard to change.

Another massive problem is that, because of this sudden economic boom in India, the price of everyday life has risen sharply. I mean in these last 10 years prices of everyday products has risen 10 times. Daily income didnt (this is talking about the poor people who work on a daily wage). Since education was a privilage in the past many missed out. There is a massive divide in society due to that, and thats going to take a long time to change.

People are suffering everywhere, even in China, but the Chinese government is very good at projecting an image of progress through control. The Indian government does the same without addresing the fact that there is a problem and they gotta do something fast to avoid a total disaster.

Man sorry to say, but thats such a retarded comment. The British didnt teach us how to live, they ruled our country and plundered our resources. Which history books did you read. Yes they left infrastructure, but thats 70+ years old. Our values and the culture that we have is different and is different in every country British or not British.

Sati is something particular and arises from a tradition. Whether people continue it or not is irrelevant. If a person wants to take their life for certain reasons I feel they have the choice to decide. Euthanasia is an issue everywhere around the world.

Corruption and governments is once again a creation of the British. It was their corrupt ways which paved the way for the governments to continue to plunder, difference being that in the UK certain revolutions ranging from the 60's to the 80/90's made them what they are today. The people stood up to the fact that the governments were wrong and got things changed. I'm not saying things are perfect today, but as far as social progress and society as a whole is concerned YES, then the economy, the wars, the reforms, etc are other issues which directly affect society as a structure.

Crime is everywhere bipin, even the biggest and best cities around the world have problems with all kinds of crime, south america no comparison, the mafia.. forget it man. India has smaller issues of crime, but bigger issues of terrorism as it is a secular nation, and hosts i think the worlds second or third largest muslim population + the buddhist refugees christians in all flavours from the catholic to the 7th day to the evangelists etc. throw in the jains the dalits the naxals(tribals) a good 600 million hindus and you've got chaos. So petty crime will exist as it does everywhere, even in your so stated USA.
