USB HDDs: u dont need to restart PC, thy r PnP aka Plug and Play.

other thn USB HDDs: first of all u cant connect thm without shutdown ur PC. Connect >> PowerON >> Create Partition (If HDD is New) >> Done.

I'm not talking abt PnP..
I have 320 gb HDD in system from beginning..now i want to add another 1 tb HDD..that makes it 1 TB + 320 Gb (Total)..So aft plugging the ports..i'll start system as usual..
when it's started completely; will i see the additional HDD/ new partition in "My Computer"..that is an "Extra Partition" just left for formating once & get it done??

u need to create Partition(s) first ur new 1TB HDD.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management > Right Click on ur 1TB HDD > Create Partition > after Partition, Format all ur Partitions of ur New 1TB HDD (if u try to open newly created partitions in "My Computer" system will ask to Format before use) >> Done

By doing this i'll not lose any data in 320 gb HDD.right??

I would suggest not to create partitions, it takes lot of time to move files within a HD but with partitions.

Just shift some files (non system files) from your 320gb hd to the new one and organize it.

And format the new drive before using it, wont do any harm to your old HD

Adding a 1TB HDD will give you an additional 931GB of storage space.

Personally I would partition it into two.

Partition “One”, about 300GB to be used as a back-up for your main drive.

Partition “Two” could be split up by using folders or even folders within
folders if needed.

You should not need to format the new hard drive. It should come pre formatted NTFS which is the standard file format for new versions of Windows.. ie 2000 and above.

Personally, I would partition the new hard drive. I would create a partition exactly the size of my pagefile and dedicate it to page file turning off the page file for all other drives including your system drive which is usually C.

The standard rule for pagefile size is 1.5 x the amount of installed ram. Some techs have different opinions of what the size should be but, 1.5 is a rule of thumb and will give you no problems.

Edit: After reading musicbouy's reply it would not be a bad idea to create an extra partition for backup. However, I like to keep my back up on a drive that is not continuously connected to the computer. JMO
