hdtv rip? lol obvious

I have a question, that i am wanting to know. I wasnt sure where thus post should home. So please feel free, to shift to proper location (accept trash bin )

OK so my question is; how do i go about recording tv in HD format? i would like get music videos and cut them up into mp4 etc what sort of equipment and software do i need in order to do thus?

i see people uploading HDTV television shows but i do not know how to get them onto pc.

someone help a friend in need?
