A study reveals that inventive spelling, rather than memorizing, makes learning simpler. Should that be the new way to spell?

What if you could create your very own spellings? Take any word and spell them just as they sound. Different, isn’t it? Well, that’s what some schools in West are doing. After all, inventive spellings, they say, allow children to arrange letters according to their understanding and not necessarily conform to the norms. Yes, they are not expected to spell right, but come up with their own perception of a word. But is this tweaking of spellings unhealthy for English language?

Don’t play around with the rules, says a Principal. “Experimenting with the Queen’s Language will only lead to chaos. The first eight years are crucial in laying down the foundation of a child. Giving such freedom to him/her can ruin one’s ability to spell correctly later. Also, a teacher maybe unable to decipher the words as spelt by the kid. Spellings shouldn’t be given away in the name of creativity. Allow a child to learn at his/her own pace and s/he wil eventually come to terms with it,” she says.

But how much leeway should actually be allowed? Concentrate on the phonics of complicated, tricky words only, suggests another teacher, adding, “an average student can manage with learning correct spellings of common words. Only technical words are required to be simplified or broken down. For the sake of making kids learn, one can temporarily break the rules, else invented spellings are against the norm.”

However, inventive spellings can help in the development of a child’s ability to write and read. Also, inventive words can be used to test a child’s creative ability. Says another Teacher, “Let their creative juices flow by granting them the freedom to spell as they like. By discouraging them to invent, you are just fettering a child’s imagination and freedom to express.”

However, this freedom should come with a rider. “Orally, inventive spellings help in learning correct pronunciation of words. But while writing, the reader should be able to understand what you want to communicate via your words. Thus, standardization of spellings is important. Being able to communicate effectively is the key,” says a teacher.

Actually this is not that new in Serbia, here spelling is the same as the talking so for example "are" is in English read like "a" and a smooth "r" but in serbian if you want the same sound you just write "ar" and that's it, so I'm familiar with the idea and that way the speling mistakes can be brought to a minimum but also it's tricky to learn after you master the real writing and spelling.:o)
