Why are files Rar'd and then Zipped

Hi all, Why do people Rar files up and then Zip them, its doesn't seem to make sense to me. I also thought RAR was a better compression than ZIP so to then ZIP RAR files up seems to be a waste of time and can actually increase the size of the resulting files.

As an example a friend of mine downloaded a Corel Painter torrent for Mac, Mac's aren't the best for unzipping/unraring files so having to unzip files that get unzipped to their own folder and then moving the RAR files contained within the folders to a separate folder so you can unRAR the RAR files can be tedious. In windows you can right click and say Extract to here.

But once unzipped the collective file sizes are obviously different but not so much that it makes it beneficial to zip a set of rar files up.

The Zip files total in Bytes: 205,084,204 bytes

The RAR files that have been unzipped in Bytes: 205,044,849 bytes

A discrepancy of approx 38KB, which is probably just info about the RAR files... OK not exactly earth shattering news but it hardly seems worth the effort to INCREASE the file size for torrent distribution.

It can't be a compression gain because the file size increases?
It can't be to use a common format because you still have to unRAR the RAR files you unZip
It can't be for security because there is none

So what other reason could there be for doing this? what benefits are gained? am I totally missing the point of this?

ummm LoL .... it's done so that patches/cracks/keygens don't get quaranteened ....

This is the first in 9 years on the scene that i've seen someone complain of such a difficult and tedious process to get expensive software for free .... speechless

if this is the example your on about

Path Size
file_id.diz 0.39 kB
x-force.nfo 5.73 kB
xcp15d01.zip 9.54 MB
xcp15d02.zip 9.54 MB
xcp15d03.zip 9.54 MB
xcp15d04.zip 9.54 MB
xcp15d05.zip 9.54 MB
xcp15d06.zip 9.54 MB

these are scene files the guys at the sense dont upload to torrent sites
they upload to private hosts which most dont have a resume option
eg..while uploading if something were to go wrong like loss of connection to host or home connection
instead of reuploading the whole thing again they would just reupload the missing parts
its not for compression its to save time and bandwidth imagine uploading a single 30gb file and losing connection at 29gb

torrent sites usually only archive patches/keygens like yogi said

Not complaining dude, understanding, Macs and archive files are a pain regardless of where the files come from. I thought there was a specific reason for putting a group of RAR files into a group of Zip files.

Quarantined by what? Antivirus software, wouldn't that only happen if you had auto scan for archives turned on in your AV software and if you are downloading these files you wouldn't have that feature turned on surely, else you'd be getting FP's every 5 mins, plus if you unzip and then unrar the files unless you have the AV scan on execute turned off it would quarantine a keygen/crack as soon as you accessed the folder.

I can understand about the split files and partial uploads or upload's in increments but that still doesn't warrant RAR files in ZIP files.

Just curious is all.

Speechless... I have that effect on people.

For anyone that wants to know, you can use Terminal on mac to unzip zipped files to one directory instead of a separate folder for each zip file

Open Terminal:

cd /path/to/your/folder
unzip \*.zip
