Registry is like the equivillent (i cant spell) of a car manual to a car, it tells you what everything does, what it can do and can't.
If you tinker with your registry it like ripping pages out of your car manual, soon it'll make no sense and well the rest is a dirty system restore.
It also stores where files are stored on your hard drive - so erasing keys in the registry will also mess up your configuration.
As LesLes says there you can make a backup of your registry, but (LesLEs no offense) what use is a back up of the Registry in DOS mode, eg. your computer won't load.
With XP and Vista you cannot by system default load up to DOS, you have to create a DOS Bootable disc (floppy disc - also created in NERO applications 6 and 7) however in Windows 3.1/95/98/98SE/2000/ME you could load up to DOS.
So my message is clear. Don't fix whats not broken.
Another thing too - don't trust these adverts flashing up saying your registry is corrupted or damaged - its rubbish - you download the software using the link from a flash up advert - you could then damage your system or even let a little virus in - pretty shit eh
Registry is more aimed at professionals such as admin/lesles and magic!!
