Easy backup and Encoding for beginners

I would like to share what I consider one of the easier ways to rip & encode movies for our community if you want to upload superb quality with little hard effort.

You only need 2 applications (for about 98% of DVD movies)

Download DVDShrink 3.2
Download Handbreak

DVD Shrink

Step 1: After inserting dvd in your dvd drive, open DVD Shrink 3.2


Step 2: Go to edit then preferences,output files tab, make sure you have checked the top 3 and leave the bottom 2 unchecked. You do not want to split your VOB files. (This will make coding easy if you leave this unchecked)


Step 3: Choose your dvd drive and hit ok


Step 4: Hit Re Author


Step 5: Select Main Title or track you want to copy hit Add


Step 6: Hit compression settings tab, change to no compression, and select the audio track you want to use.


Step 7: Hit Backup button(Re Author will still look clicked), select your save to location make sure to check the create the Video and Audio TS sub-folders check box on the tab and hit ok.


Your dvd will copy in a few minutes. After backup is complete open handbrake.

Time to encode your movie to with HandBreak

Step 1: Open handbrake and hit source, video TS Folder (you can also select right from the dvd with some dvds or used Any DVD)But for now were doing it using dvd shrink method.


Step 2: Browse to where you just saved your dvd copy from DVD Shrink and select the Vidoe_TS folder and hit OK


Step 3:Select Chapters Tab, un-check chapter markers. This will change your file type to MP4(Best for playing on PS3, XB360 ect)


Step 4: Select Video Tab and make your adjustments. I use default and select H.264

Step 5: Hit Start and a CMD box will pop up and stat encoding your new release.


It will take some time so go do something else. When it is finished you have your movie in a good file size and can share high quality with the rest of the community.

with this software can u encode it to avi or is it just h 264 format? ty for the great post. at the moment im using w ripping platium software but i want to reduce the file size output, for instance iv just ripped alan carr dvd and it came out at just under 1gb, how do i make it come out as a smaller file size? like somthin 500mb"ish.anyway ty.
