Reliable portable HDD Maker
Hope ya all doing great,
The thing is iam planning to go for a 1TB portable hdd, couldn't makeup my mind which maker to go with, went searching but nothing helps, some says to go for WD, some says seagate, blackblaze old review says more failure on seagate, new (2015) says WD's failure rate has gone high. So was wondering which one to go for am sure some real experience with ET members could sure help, thank you.
I can't advise you on the manufacturers because I
have no need of such devices, but...
The biggest complaints I hear are about incompatibility
with certain files formats. I would try to be sure your HDD
can decode .MKV files and if you find one that can handle
x265 HEVC encoded files even better! Right now x265 is not
that widely used and may never take off like it was once
believed (to be the successor of x264) But many encoders
ARE moving away from .AVI and to lesser extent.MP4.
Edit! Well Aruyire, after reading some of your comment
history I can tell EVERYTHING I typed here is known to you!
I'll not delete post as it may prove helpful to others.
Off topic, I do agree on what you had to say about dumpers!
Will be looking for more inputs on the life of HDD's whether it gotta do anything with the makers, if so sure it would help just not only me.. thnx in advance
Every HDD has the potential to fail prematurely...
The chance of this happening fluctuates between type, model and even between production batches. I don't think there is any definitive proof that nowadays in general there is a lot of difference in reliability between the top brands as WD, Seagate etc.. Ofcourse sometimes a manufacture produces worse batches and sometimes better (as you pointed out with the WD thing in 2015), but in the end they all had their fair share of failing drives.
In my opinion, as long as you buy one of the top brands, the best thing you can do is go for the one with the best after support. I can recommend WD when it comes to after support... I even had a retailer replace a WD hdd for me once which I didn't even bought there, because according to the salesman, WD really accepts back almost everything without questions, so why wouldn't they create a happy customer
