But will it take off? We'll have to wait and see on that one, but the incredible popularity of movies such as Avatar and Up has proven we have a thirst for 3D in the cinema, at least. TV manufacturers are now betting that interest will stretch to a desire to watch our TV programmes bursting from the screen.
As a result, there will be several 3D televisions to choose from by the end of the year. Further details, such as price and launch dates, remain sketchy but we do know you'll still have to wear glasses to get the 3D effect.
True 3D
Most sets will be using active shutter technology, where powered glasses alternately dim the glass over the left and then right eyes. The effect is that each eye sees a separate stream of images, enabling true 3D.
A cheaper alternative is to use polarised glasses, such as those handed out at cinemas for the latest round of 3D movies. These present each eye with a filtered version of the image on screen, so that each sees a slightly different image, tricking the brain into processing a 3D view.
Either way, with the launch of Sky 3D coming in April, as well as 3D Blu-ray players imminent, the result will be 3D video at home within the next few months. So what will be the initial TV sets on offer? Take a closer look at the first 3D televisions.
