Fake or not... and If yes then why?

| Posted: Fri Oct 05, 2007 05:08 Author: There is no hard and fast rule that any compressed file MUST be a fake or malicious... even passworded files have an even chance of being real.
I have had several .rar/.zip files off this site and other torrent sites with no probs... even some that supply the dreaded text doc with a url that's supposed to have the password hidden in the page have worked for me in the past, although anything that requests the user to download an .exe to open the files is OBVIOUSLY a no-no...
My Q is this tho' take for instance this featured ExtraTorrent:
Sex And Submission - 6 Scenes XXX Porn
OK, adult movie torrents are slightly more dangerous because the spooks tend to think that they won't get so easily reported, and OK it's a .rar with a password file, this much is clear, but...
The files look good, the .rar is the right sort of size, the description has the right sort of names, and moreover when I tried downloading it, the user stats were seeds 29, leechers 47 and a health stat in the 60-70% region.
This file downloaded nicely but the password data was invalid...
Ha Ha Ha I hear U cry... fooled by a fake... but WHY???
There has been no malware or malicious activity associated with this torrent, my security is good and I would have been informed, at no time was I requested to download any executable, and even the files seem genuine... so WHY?
What on earth use is it to anyone to provide fake torrents for no reason? If it's not an attack what's the point?
Unless the url changed and the whole thing is genuine except for that fact, I just don't geddit??
Any thoughts?
[ps I have provided feedback for other users about this torrent already]
| I will hand you over to admin who will respond in full, but from me as co-administrator I say that fake torrents are uploaded to deter people from getting the real deal.
Check back for a full response from admin
| Posted: Fri Oct 05, 2007 16:07 Author: admin People who make spam will try make all as real of course. Is it possible to stop spam? Do you have any mailbox without any spam? No, bcos spam people not stupid too.
Of course i cant give 100% spam recognize rules. Bcos there is no such. I can give just suggestions. And most important - avoid archives. Yes it can be right archive, yes it can be without pass, but its like lottery. Also check total size of torrent. If it small archive - its 95% fake.
This year we plan start our new tracker. We will track ONLY good torrents on our servers and we will seed them all. So watch site news
Thanks for usint our system.
| Posted: Fri Oct 05, 2007 19:28 Author: Thanks for such a swift response, it's nice to know peeps are watching the forum and interested enough to reply to goof balls asking stupid questions...
Of course despite your responses my question remains... WHY?
If someone spams your mailbox, they are trying to attack your machine OR sell you something, even if it's just selling you the idea of clicking on their site. The idea that someone would go to the trouble of posting a fake torrent simply to deter people from generally downloading any torrents at all seems ludicrous to me. If their agenda was to generally stop p2p file swapping, they would surely include something malicious... far more of a deterrent!
Mr Admin; The reason I chose the torrent mentioned in my original post as an example, is precisely because the file IS the right size... everything looks 'kosher'... infact the stats showed 180-odd previous downloaders, but not a single comment against the torrent!!
No-one tried to sell me anything... no-one redirected me anywhere... no attack was made on my machine... no possible motive for crap like this can be discerned... not by my small brain anyways...
So anyhow, great site... keep up the good work, and the new tracker system sounds great, it's about time some sort of verification method was employed if u ask me, so well done. I will continue to post any info on other dodgy torrents as and when, and hope that other users do the same. Thanx again for the feedback

| Posted: Sat Oct 06, 2007 02:48 Author: admin Its same spam as mail spam. They promote their sites or software. "Go to site ... to get password". And you go to their site and give them traffic, etc. Or you watch trailer or shot movie scene and you see site url on picture - same spam method to get free traffic. So this is answer for your question. Its same as mail spam, but promote only sites. | |
