subtitles question

I hope I am posting this question in the correct location? I am new to the torrent world and especially new to burning movies on DVD. I just took up the project of burning my movies to DVD this past week. I am still learning as I go, but think I am getting the hang of it. I have been using ConvertXtoDVD and imgburn. The real issue that I am having is adding subtitles to the movies. They never seem to sync up with the video. I came across a program called subsync & I downloaded it onto my computer. With subsync,I was able to sync up the subtitles on my first try with little or no problem. Then, on the second movie I tried it on....I encountered a problem! This is a French film (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) & subtitles are an absolute necessity, or obviously, I will not be able to watch it. I don't know if anybody out there in ExtraTorrent-land is familiar with the program subsync? When I went to add the srt/subtitle file, I got an error message that said..."file is corrupt and not in subrip format". I downloaded a different version of the srt file and got the same message from subsync the second time around. I also got the same message from the third movie that I tried to sync the subtitles on. Could there really be something wrong with the subtitle files? Is there a way to fix them? I am ultimately trying to add them to the film, so that I can then burn it onto DVD and watch it on TV. Thanks for the help in advance if anybody knows how to use subsync, or has come across this error message before.

yes, it is sort of the same topic. the first post i was asking how to sync subtitles. with this post i was asking about an error that subsync was giving me while i was trying to sync the subtitles. the question was more about the error and how to fix it than the actual procedure. still no answers.....anybody?
