best way to take DVD to AVI?

AutoGK hasn't been updated in years, and encodes at a pretty lossy (CQ=3 for XviD at 100%) rate.

1. Rip movie with DVDdecrypter or similar tool.
2. Use DVDShrink to convert the multiple VOBs into a single giant VOB (do NOT use the shrink feature to compress DVD9 or larger movies down to DVD5 or 4.37gb).
3. (optional) Use MagicDVDripper to strip off anything you don't want, or if DVDshrink doesn't correctly index the "main movie" to include (or exclude) various bits you want or don't want.
4. (optional) Use VideoReDoPlus to further losslessly edit the giant MPEG2 files.

....now use your favorite tool to encode the big, fat VOB (or MPEG2) file you have.

I like AutoMKV, a sadly also now-unmaintained tool, but one which has a TON of useful features, presets and profiles, as well as a manual cropper which doesn't suck.


IMO there is no good single tool which will convert a DVD straight to a finished compressed file with any decent quality.
