GDC 2011 Hands-On: Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword

| Fire and Sword is the newest installment in the Mount & Blade franchise. This past week at GDC 2011 I got to sit down with the producer and play. It was definitely the most fun I've ever had sitting on a horse, and I've learned, perhaps belatedly, that it's a lot more challenging to kill somebody while charging them from horseback. The producer explained that quite a lot of calculation went into how much damage was delt during your swing, which blade you picked, how far into your swing you were, how fast you're going on your horse in relation to the target... on and on. I was definitely able to get in there and do some damage, but mastery will take time.
Taking place in eastern Europe during the 17th century, right around the time that gunpowder started being important to military victory, Mount and Blade pits one country against the rest: Poland, Russia, Ukraine, the Crimean continent and Sweden. Fans from previous Mount & Blade games wanted a little more history in their sword battles, so that's here in Fire and Sword, and you can definitely steer history your way by picking a different country and leading them to victory.
In addition to your existing national military force, the player can buy troops from mercenary camps, a much requested feature from previous versions of the game. Each element of your troops are customizable, from their horses to their helmets to their gloves and weapons, and everything in between. So you can really get all Sun Tzu on their butts by customizing your army down to the minutest detail.
The single player mode has been much expanded from previous versions of Mount & Blade. A storyline runs through each faction, so there's a lot of replay there. Multiplayer mode uses War Band's engine which allows a huge number of players without overly taxing the servers. I'm told that on some good servers you could see up to 250 players on screen at one time, but this number is really only limited by current server technology. Captain Mode allows the player control over squads of 'bots, (3 to 24 total) and you can issue them commands and buy upgrades for them and select exactly the squads that you want. There's also 12 new maps, my favorite being the marketplace. 'Cause who doesn't want to fight a huge battle in a marketplace? The swamp map is pretty cool too.
Ultimately this was a lot of fun to play. I'd recommend it to anybody.
NOTE:I know guyz that I usually post reviews bout games that will be later released and that my reviews aren't copiated from elsewere but this article is just outstanding.I wanna hear your opinion about this new expansion.
