Google to Stream British Royal Wedding Live on YouTube

If you've been fretting that the royal wedding is quickly approaching and flights to London are out of your recession-era budget, rest easy. Google has announced that the historic event will be streamed live on YouTube.

Millions will be in London on April 29 to see Prince William marry Catherine Middleton in the first wedding of its kind since Lady Diana Spencer wed Prince Charles in 1981. The event will be televised, but if you can't get to a TV, you can catch the festivities on the Royal Household's official YouTube channel starting at 5 a.m. Eastern time on the day of the wedding.

"More than 50 years ago, the marriage of The Queen's sister, Princess Margaret, and Antony Armstrong-Jones was the first royal wedding to be broadcast on television and had over 20 million viewers," Rachel Ball, a Google partner development associate, wrote in a blog post. "This one is already heralded as the first of the Internet age, where for the first time in thousands of years of royal history, the moment will be captured online and preserved forever."

The footage will cover the wedding procession, Westminster Abbey ceremony, and balcony kiss. The channel will also include commentary on a live blog, providing updates through the course of the day.

For those hankering for a more permanent record of the event, besides a commemorative beer stein or a replica engagement ring, a recording of the wedding will be sold on iTunes via Decca Records. Decca also released recordings from the wedding of Charles and Diana, as well as a recording of Princess Diana's 1997 funeral.

Google has also expanded 3D imagery on Google Earth to give a detailed look at the wedding procession route in what it calls a "royals'-eye view." You can follow along and see detailed images of major London landmarks like the Houses of Parliament, 10 Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, and more.
