Amazon Slashes Price on Verizon HTC Thunderbolt to $130

For a limited time, Amazon has slashed the price on the HTC Thunderbolt 4G for new Verizon Wireless customers. The phone, the first on Verizon's LTE network, has been reduced to $129.99 from the usual price of $249.99.

The offer is only good for those new to Verizon, and they must sign a two-year contract. Existing customers looking to upgrade will have to cough up $199.99 for the smartphone.

Verizon sold has sold 260,000 of the Thunderbolt since it launched on March 17, president and CEO of Verizon Telecom and Business Fran Shammo said in a Thursday earnings call. The company has also sold another 250,000 4G LTE Internet devices, Shammo also said.

During the last quarter, Verizon added 1.8 million customers to its wireless business, 906,000 of which signed contracts. Sixty percent of phones sold during the quarter were smartphones, a 36 percent increase from last year. That's due in part to Verizon's launch of the Apple iPhone, of which 2.2 million were activated in the first eight weeks.

However, one analyst said the Thunderbolt has been more popular than the iPhone at some Verizon stores. BTIG Research polled 150 U.S. stores to find that 28 percent of them said the Thunderbolt was more popular. Just 11 percent said they sold more iPhones, while 61 percent of stores said they sold the same amount of both devices.

The Thunderbolt is one of 10 4G LTE devices that Verizon unveiled at CES this year. Verizon launched the LTE network in December.

Amazon's offer is good until midnight pacific time on Monday.
