| I have a 5 year old 200Gb Seagate hard drive and need some help in trying to rescue it.
It fell asleep on me last year, it was a back-up drive in the family computer and it had had very little, if any use, and I can only think it might of suffered a bit of heat damage!!!
Does anybody know of any good software that will run checks/analyse it before I hit it on the head with a big hammer.

| try having a look at using something like IDE cables,i got mine cheap from EBAY
and connect it to your computer via USB this way it is treated as a slave drive,this method has worked for me to check/recover data from dead hard drives that even the so called professionals could not retrive.
or you could also to try the seagate tools which can be d/loaded from the site.

|  Posted: Fri Aug 05, 2011 15:53  To change the drive from master to slave drive u just need to switch the jumpers which r located behind the HD.
The image is just an example...the jumpers settings n layout may differ!
N yeah recovery depends on if ur drive is physically damaged or needs driver/firmware upgrade.
n this is his Hd series "Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3200822A" just incase. |

| Thanks guys for all your replys but my drive is a Sata not an IDE so it does not have any jumper settings.
Downloaded the seagate software and going to give that a try.
If I get no joy with that i'm going to buy a USB Caddie and try that.
I know Hard Drives are a lot cheaper now and have become a throw away item but i'm reluctant to bin this one till i've, with your help, tried everything going.
Please post any other help or thoughts now you know it's a Sata drive.

| sorry bout that,looking at segate page tought it was IDE,but you can also get the sata cables fairly cheep from ebay as well.
also the caddys are good just got one for both ide/sata and works well,also the sata docking stations are good,if your in the uk look up Maplin web page they have had some good deals on docking stations lately or some B-deals(returns/repairs) |

| Posted: Fri Sep 30, 2011 14:52 Author: USB dock or plug into the mainboard SATA ports and run Getdataback. Probably the best recovery software I've ever used. If the drive spins it will recover from it. |

UBCD is used instead of the OS of whatever machine it is in, and is very useful if you have a virus - as you can perform isolated data surgery. It can also check the health of your memory, or as a last resort format the hard drive to MIL spec (a 40Gb took 5 hours on a 1GHz Athlon) |
