A Chant Album from the Sacred Writings of the Sikhs to experience Love.
Prem means the experience of love, deep love. It is the love that you have the courage and wisdom to feel in yourself for yourself, it is the love that God feels for you.
We project ourselves through every moment of time and space whether it is through sounds, thoughts, or feelings. The gift of every human being is to truly express the soul through the intelligence of the mind and body. Often times however we are burdened with so many expectations and desires of what we should be that we cannot truly express who we are. If you take a 60 second period and just watch your mind you will observe a cycle of experience that is identical to a longer cycle of experience over a day, a month, a year, a lifetime. It doesn’t matter how long you observe your mind; it is what it is. We cycle through receiving information, processing it, and then projecting out our reality through the medium of sound, thought, or feeling.
In order to project the reality of the honest self, the soul, Yogi Bhajan has taught the science of Naad Yoga. Naad means sound current. It is the primal sound that connects the basic elements of the physical body to the etheric elements of the soul. Naad Yoga uses sacred mantras from the writings of the Sikh Gurus in the beautiful poetic language of Gurumukhi. These mantras are traditionally practiced with a straight spine, in a meditative posture. As the mantras are sung the energy of the sound current creates a channel of healing energy through the spinal chord and out the top of the head. Essentially what happens is that through the repetition of these sacred mantras the tongue stimulates meridian points on the roof of the mouth. These points in turn stimulate the hypothalamus to secrete which controls the pituitary gland and pineal gland. In yogic practice we call this the turning of the lotus. A visual image is that at the top of the head rests the lotus flower or the tenth gate. It faces upwards. Through Naad Yoga the Kundalini energy rises from the base of the spine to the top of the head. At this time the lotus flower turns upside down and rains nectar down upon the yogi. In physical terms the glandular system is stimulated. In spiritual terms the sweetness of angels caresses each and every cell. Through the practice of Naad Yoga we can increase our immune system, or physical well being, mental calmness, and connection to the spirit.
Often times people tell me, “ I don’t have a good voice, I can’t sing.” I tell them that the very sound of your voice is what will heal you if you just allow it to be you. By practicing Naad Yoga we can obtain the experience of heaven on earth in our own body. This experience will in turn bring light to the rest of your life simply by the natural flow of energy that you have created within yourself. Prem is my new album that is created so that anyone can take it, listen to it, chant with it, and be with it. It is called Prem because in the beautiful process of figuring out which mantras to do, creating the tunes, and bringing them to the studio it gave me a deep sense of self love and healing. May it also bring self-love and healing into your life.
I am joined by Thomas Barquee, my producer and great friend, who has helped to bring the quality of music to heavenly standards. My loving mother, Prabhu Nam Kaur has given her rich voice and most appreciated guidance throughout the process of creating this album. I have also been very blessed to have Lily Hayden (violin), Zoran Todorovic (guitar and mandolin), and Jim McGrath (percussion) all world class musicians contribute the most exquisite instrumentation that I could imagine. I am grateful to the down to earth Punjabi style tabla playing that brings me straight back to my time in India by Avtar Singh, and the wonderful vocals of Laura Kerr, Guru Ganesha Singh, and Kirtan Singh. This album is uplifting to me, may it be uplifting to you!
In Snatam's voice I know there is purity, clarity, and love. Her voice honors the ancient traditions of which she is a part of. - Ram Dass

I am blessed with God's love every time I listen to the Prem CD. It's great meditation music or just while driving in the car. One can't help but to sing along at times. It also stirs up many emotions as it touches one's soul at a deep and loving level. It is simply perfection!!! - Sheila Calitri, Peterborough, NH
Comments from a music store: We kicked off this holiday season with some interesting things taking place. This year we have put speakers outside of our store. It's the first time we tried this and so far its been highly successful. The first CD I played was Prem by Snatam Kaur Khalsa...oh my, what a delightful response..we can't get enough of this title. People just kept drifting in to find out more. The energy was incredible as people who we have never seen before we somehow drawn by the music and the word of mouth...to come and visit and spend time. What a blessing is the music..." - Richard Deangelis - Unity Inc., Miami FL
I've been meaning to do this for a while. I wish to personally, deeply thank you, and to thank the Maker of Snatam Kaur, for all your blessed music that is gracing our lives. You allow the sound of the Guru to manifest here on Earth. You give us as teachers, beautiful, uplifting and masterful sacred music as tools in our Kundalini Yoga classes. You inspire us to sing your shabads and resonate with the Shabd Guru - in the gurdwaras and throughout the day. I bow to your gift. I bow to your love and devotion to share it with us all. May Blessings shower down upon you and yours. - Dharm Kaur, Vancouver
Prem means the experience of love, deep love. The music truly encompasses this message; sedate percussion and ensemble mesh well with Snatam Kaur's soft voice. Instruments featured have a distinct Indian feel including the mandolin, tabla, and various percussions. Khalsa seeks to encourage those who wish to uplift themselves and understand that "experience is priceless." I found the CD is perfect for relaxation and meditation. - Stephanie Boram, Natural Beauty & Health Magazine, July, 2003
This new chant/vocal discovery is a treasure indeed. The meaning of "Prem" is the experience of profound love, and through these chants, Snatam beautifully expresses this love. Her vocals are pure and sweet, sung in a voice that is familiar and enveloping. The chants are from The Sacred Writing of the Sikhs, and will soothe your soul. This CD is like a close friend that can be called upon anytime for support, nurturing, inspiration and clarity. Deep surrender and profound peace are the feelings that come through this serene music. Deva Premal fans, take note! - Lloyd Barde, Backroads Music

Incredible Voice - Beautiful Rhythms, December 17, 2004 By A New Fan
I discovered Snatam Kaur's "Gobinda Gobinda Hari Hari" from the "Prem" CD in Amazon's Downloadable Music section. After listening to the first few seconds of it, I knew I had to buy the CD. I generally gravitate to more uptempo "active" music, but I find that I love this is incredibly soft, soothing, moving and uplifting sound. It's perfect for meditation, reading, housecleaning, waking up or going to sleep to - you name it. The entire CD is great, but in addition to "Gobinda Gobinda Hari Hari" I find "Waheguru Wahe Jio" particularly beautiful in terms of vocals and rhythm.

Beautiful CD! At first I didn't fully appreciate the quality of the music....but after I listened to it a few times I was hooked! Now I just listen to it over and over. It is the type of CD that takes a long time to get old and you just want to play all the time. The sound just puts my heart to ease. It makes you feel like "everything is going to be fine"...even though you may be dealing with all kinds of things in your life.
Not just music for pleasure...but music for the soul! I highly recommend this CD.

Perfect for relaxation and meditation and... , December 1, 2005 By Micaloneus (the Cosmos)
A few years back, I met Snatam and heard her sing these songs at "new age" music festival and I enjoyed the experience very much. She has such a beautiful vibe and a lovely spirit. I'm so thrilled to have these tracks available on this disc. Snatam's radiant voice respects those ancient traditions of which she is a part of. The music is devotional and moving and the arrangements are simply perfection. The disc encompasses the deep love message with a distinct Indian feel. It always is an uplifting experience that stirs my emotions. This is Rapture of the deep.
