Gibbs, Terry [Gubenko, Julius]
(b New York, 13 Oct 1924). American vibraphonist. He received the nickname Terry (after the prizefighter Terry Young) in his youth, and early in his career as a drummer he took the stage name Gibbs; he made Gibbs his legal surname around 1986. Having been encouraged to study music by his father, a double bass player and violinist, he learned to play drums, timpani, and xylophone; at the age of 12 he won an amateur contest as a xylophone player. During World War II he served for three years in the armed forces, during part of which he played drums in military bands. Following his discharge he worked in New York with Bill De Arango (at clubs on 52nd Street), recorded with Tiny Kahn (his musical associate from childhood) in Aaron Sachs’s quintet (1946), and joined Tommy Dorsey in California in July 1947, but then quit the same day. He then toured Scandinavia with Chubby Jackson (late 1947 – early 1948), and performed in the USA with Buddy Rich (1948), Woody Herman (September 1948 – August 1949), and Dorsey (1950). After co-leading a sextet with Louie Bellson and Charlie Shavers (1950) he was a member of Benny Goodman’s band (September 1950 – October 1952); in 1950–51 he also appeared regularly on Mel Tormé’s television series and led his own big band. He toured steadily as the leader of a small group in which Terry Pollard was a sideman (1953–7).

After moving in 1957 to California Gibbs formed a big band; among its members at various times were Conte Candoli, Stu Williamson, Bob Enevoldsen, Frank Rosolino, Charlie Kennedy, Joe Maini, Bill Holman, Med Flory, Richie Kamuca, Jack Nimitz, Pete Jolly, Lou Levy, Max Bennett, Buddy Clark, Mel Lewis, and Frank Capp, with arrangements supplied by Holman, Shorty Rogers, Al Cohn, Marty Paich, and other leading figures. Gibbs appeared with his big band at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1961 and then from 1962 to 1963 led a small group which included Alice McLeod (just before she became Alice Coltrane). He worked again in television (1964, 1968) and in 1965 became the music director of Steve Allen’s band. Later he toured widely with Allen and with his own small groups. From 1980 into the 1990s he led a quintet with Buddy DeFranco. The Contemporary label began to issue, under the name of Terry Gibbs’s Dream Band, a large collection of recordings made by his big band of 1959, and in 1986 Gibbs founded a new group under this name, involving many of its former sidemen, as well as such players as Snooky Young, Jack Sheldon, the trumpeter Steve Hufstetter, Lanny Morgan, Pete Christlieb, Bill Perkins, Tom Ranier, and Andy Simpkins. After a period of inactivity from around 1992 the Dream Band resumed performing in 1995.

Gibbs’s aggressive, swinging style was described by Leonard Feather as the bop counterpart to the work of Lionel Hampton. He is the author of Method for Vibes, Xylophone & Marimba (Pacific, MO). His son Gerry (Gerald Scott) Gibbs (b New York, 15 Jan 1964) is a jazz drummer who from 1987 performed and recorded in his father's groups and at the same time played with Alice Coltrane (1989), Philip Harper and Eddie Henderson (both from 1990), Joe Lovano (1992), and many others; he also recorded as a leader (The Thrasher, 1995, Qwest 946228).
