July 2005 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre
where 8000 people were killed in the worst massacre in Europe since
WWII. This film explores the themes of genocide and justice. In
Srebrenica, 10 years after the massacre of 8000 people, the victims
are still being exhumed from mass graves and the process of
identification is a slow and a painstaking job. For the survivors, it
is also the end of the hope that some of their missing family members
might still be alive.
The UN's Sam Power claims that genocide ‘is the product of foreign
policy that is not tailored to integrate regard for human life at a
high level'. She mentions the efforts of Rafael Lemkin, a Jew who
lived in Poland at the beginning of the 20th century. He witnessed
pogroms in his neighbourhood and started researching the barbarian
massacres of the Armenians by the Turks in 1915. After WWII he
lobbied the UN to respond to the ultimate crime which he named
After almost 50 years, one of the first people to be indicted for
complicity in genocide after the fall of Srebrenica is the Serb
general Radoslav Krstic in 2003. Hasan Nuhanovic was an eye witness
of the massacre. He lost his parents and younger brother and still
has no news of his family. They were ordered to leave the safety of
the Dutch UN forces base but Hasan was allowed to stay because he was
working as an interpreter for the Battalion. He is now 'demanding'
Petko Petkovic is a Serb refugee who lives in a freezing old hotel
without working bathrooms. He was thrown out of his village by Muslim
forces in 1993. He does not believe in reconciliation and considers
the proclaimed war criminals Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Vladic
‘heroes of the people'. Serbs still remember the 500 years of
Turkish rule and they do not accept the blame for the war atrocities.
