From the title on down, this disc announces not only that Shelby Lynne exists but that she wants you to listen. Lynne is a true original, synthesizing various, mostly Southern musical strains into a style that is as one-of-a-kind as an individual's DNA. Scattered about this engaging, enigmatic disc is a bit of Dusty in Memphis, a touch of Bobbie Gentry's swamp-country persona, a hint of Prince's instinct for making voices and rhythms sound positively libidinous, and a whole lot of Shelby Lynne.

You won't find much country music per se on Lynne's sixth album - there's more soul and jazz than steel guitar, with no trace of the usual Nashville slick country-radio fare. What you will find is a genuine evocation of country, which is to say, the rural landscape and the associations it triggers. "Where I'm From" is Lynne's fond, vernacular-filled tribute to her home state of Alabama, and like much of I Am, it moves on a lazy river of sound, seducing you after repeated listenings rather than bowling you over from the outset. On songs such as "Leavin'," with its slow but determined gait, and "Thought It Would Be Easier," with its insular, ruminative funk, Lynne describes her state of mind with an uncanny knack for aural metaphors as powerful as country's weeping guitars. And the way she harmonizes with herself throughout the record is nothing less than righteous.

Like MeShell Ndegeocello's masterful Bitter, Lynne's I Am is a breakup album that lingers. Her musical purview is as singular as her emotions are naked; check out the fusion of R&B and country in the mandolin-spiced "Life Is Bad" or the high-pitched keyboard whine that makes "Why Can't You Be?" wiggle ever so weirdly. With I Am Shelby Lynne, the woman Tammy Wynette once called "the best voice in country music" has made an album that lives up to that billing, and then some.

After years of kicking around Nashville to great acclaim but nonexistent sales, Shelby Lynne got fed up with the system and reinvented herself on I Am Shelby Lynne as a tough and sexy singer, equal parts Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow. Though this album is undeniably classicist in approach, borrowing from classic R&B, country, soul, and rock & roll, it's cleverly constructed, as producer Bill Bottrell gives it a wonderful, warm production graced by slight contemporary flourishes (such as the rolling rhythms behind "Thought It Would Be Easier") that keep it fresh, not entrenched in history (even though its succinct ten tracks and half-hour running time are welcome holdovers from classic rock). Ultimately, of course, the triumph of the record belongs to Lynne, who finally sounds comfortable in her writing and voice. This music is so warm and welcoming, it's easy to overlook the darker themes running through the songs, particularly because Lynne's greatest strength is that she never oversings, shading her phrasing and drawing listeners in with her easy confidence and sexy rasp. This isn't an album that flaunts its strengths — it's expertly constructed, subtle music that grows in stature with each spin, revealing Lynne as a trad rocker of uncommon skill and charm. It may have taken her years to finally find her groove, but I Am Shelby Lynne is so good, the wait seems worthwhile.

Shelby Lynne is an anachronism in the best sense of the word. Alabama-born, this twentysomething singer is in love with classic pop and soul, the kind sung by Dusty in Memphis and Aretha in Muscle Shoals. Working here with producer Bill Bottrell, Lynne has fashioned a remarkable album of orchestral epics ("Your Lies"), lazy-afternoon dance music ("Thought It Would Be Easier"), and gorgeous, bluesy ballads ("Lookin' Up," "Black Light Blue"). Most of the album's 10 songs are firmly rooted in the '60s and '70s, but Bottrell's production and Lynne's still-wet-from-sex voice guarantee that the album sounds time-capsule fresh instead of past-expiration-date retro. While Lynne has made fine albums before--1993's big-band and Western-swing CD Temptation is particularly good--I Am Shelby Lynne is the best work yet by a singer as stubbornly committed to musical tradition, and as defiantly out of step with country music trends, as another former Nashville maverick, Lyle Lovett.
