Torrent Description
"Soul Vibration #001", the first down-tempo release from Liquid Records, is a result of much time spent selectively searching amongst the movers and shakers in London's electronic and alternative music scene today... After many years of putting on festivals and exclusive music and arts-based events, the label founder James Anthony (aka Liquid Djems) - an established DJ in London and internationally, has put together his years of experience, talent and considerable contact list of producers and artists to create this exciting new venture.

Soul Vibrations is a collection of rarely heard musical gems, the ones that cross the boundaries of distinct categorisation with a fusion of styles that makes each one greater than the sum of its parts. The tracks deliver a classy blend of real instrumentation, electronic manipulation and a full showcase of the bass line in all its glory! The overall selection has a psychedelic and dubby vibe with added ethnic, trance and drum n bass flavours ...more "havin' it gently" than "chill out".

The artists who have contributed to this compilation are a collection of seasoned producers and newer talent... all of whom have stepped up and delivered something exclusive for this project... With tracks from classy producer and dub selecta extraordinaire Nick Manasseh, The Orb and Alien Soap Opera's Greg Hunter, Interchill's best selling artist Gaudi, dub-wise producer and soundsystem veteran Redseal, groovy dub-meister Ott and the don of monster soundscapes Graham Wood amongst others... This is a compilation not to be left on the shelf!

"Soul Vibrations #001 gives a great snapshot of current UK chillout/downtempo, and by the sounds of this CD, the scene seems to be in very fine form indeed. There's a wide eclectic mix of sounds and styles on the album, perhaps far more so than it overseas counterparts, with breaks influences as obvious as the more traditional dub, psychdelic and ethnic sounds. Compiled by Liquid Djems, its track listing is a virtual who's who of the current UK scene from veterans like Graham Wood and Greg Hunter, through current faves like Ott (as Umberloid), Red Seal, Gaudi and Trispswitch, to new acts like Slackbaba, Manesseh, Nagual Sound Experiment. Tracks that stood out for me included a great electrodub/breaks work out from Red Seal which almost enters More Rockers territory, a simple idea done well by Oganismic with the self explanatory "Joos Harp" and the jazzy funky dub of Manesseh. And, as you might imagine from the first chillout release on Liquid Records, there's more than enough tripped out psychedelia to keep you happy as well. So all in all a highly recommended purchase, and definitely one to keep and play to the grandkids to let them know what it was all about in 2005!" -- Upfront Sept 2005 (www.triskelemanagement.com)

Review by www.morpheusmusic.co.uk:

STYLE:
Powerful electronic downtempo with touches of dub, ethnic areas and some strong, driving rhythm sections. Soul Vibration is carried in many places by looming bass lines and intense drums - nevertheless, plenty of fresh effects, synthetic motifs and manipulated voices (both spoken and sung) are woven into the mix. This album doesn't sit comfortably in any clear genre - straddling a few boundaries as acidic electronics juxtapose rasta phrases, atmospheric passages sit alongside the bounces and stabs of dub and Middle Eastern instrumentation & singing work beside the omnipresent dense basses.

MOOD:
The weight of sound here creates a thick fervour where trippy overtones and psychedelic incidentals float and flicker across the top. Soul Vibration is a relatively energetic album for a downtempo offering, at times presenting an almost tribal ardour, an eclectic gravity all bound up in a celebration of danceable rhythm.

OVERALL:
Compiled by James Anthony (of Liquid Djems fame) - some prestigious talent has been drawn together for this compilation: Greg Hunter (once of The Orb and part of Alien Soap Opera), Gaudi, Ott, Nick Manasseh and Graham Wood are all here among others. Liquid Records (found at www.triskelemanagement.com) are a relatively new label and have set out to make something of a statement with this album - real instruments, passionate vocals (courtesy of Irena Mikhalova), deft programming and well placed world sounds interconnect in a cohesive whole that keeps the pace at the top end of the chill spectrum.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS ALBUM:
This CD will appeal to someone looking for 'ambient' dance material with plenty of pace and originality. Not for those wanting drifting, floating chill material - Soul Vibration has more of a festival feel, music to move to.

Review by www.psyreviews.com:

"After making their mark on the trance side with Build Your Own Reactor, upcoming UK label Liquid Records make a stab at the already-crowded downtempo sector. Psyreviews has said it so many times, but in this subgenre a release has to stand out or it drowns. Some will just be head and shoulders above the rest; some will have a unique approach; and some will just have this wonderful energy to it, a certain magic that makes it a strong release: Soul Vibration is one of these. Ott's side-project Umberloid kicks off with Exit Chapel Perilous, a fusion of dub and blues that works wonderfully. The midsection have a cute little melody that's held back from soaring the way it wants to, like it's being tethered but still allowed to fly. Reality Staircase's Sodium Stones is a nice, drifting piece with a good mulch of heavy sounds somehow balanced out to create a mellow vibe, and Slackbaba's Dubterrania shows why this is an act making waves at the moment. Deeply psychedelic, and retaining a 'live band' feel, the way it all somehow hangs together is incredible. Think dub with only the bass holding it all together, peppered with more sounds than you'd get from a coachload of hippies who've just eaten a stash of burritos. Red Seal are up next: if you're familiar with their output (unjustly thin on the ground if you ask me), you'll know it as a psy-chill version of festival reggae, as though Zion Train stopped taking amphetamines and ditched the female vocalist. Battle For Liquid Space has an escalating chord pattern, over which the track unfolds smoothly, with a slomo digidub backbone underneath it. Classy. Manasseh's Ribbit Teacha has been on heavy rotation here this week, it's a funky blend of reggae, soul, and psychededlia... sort of like a 70s cop show set on samothraki island. Heavyweights Gaudi and Tripswitch combine forces with On The Edge, which surprisingly sounds nothing like either of their solo work - more like a meeting in the middle. It coasts along nicely, with a very heavy groove counterbalanced by some utterly gorgeous topends... sounds you'd expect to fine in trance. It's an absolute belter this one, with enough energy to work as a psybreaks number: respect. Nagual Sound Experiment I've heard a lot of talk about, but Chimera is their first track I've caught... And fuck me backwards with a broom handle if this isn't corking stuff. Reverb-heavy psychobilly dub-hop. Shpongloid intricacy. Magical truculence. Dig? Organismic's Joos Harp is a fucking dream of a track, it's breaks with a spread between tecchy, fluid, rudeboy and dreamy. Funkier than your mama, it's got that perfect amount of everything to make a very, very special record. Graham Wood's Mori Morma is a more standard psychill tune, loaded with (probably) sample-CD-ethnic-wailing. Finally Greg Hunter's Neuro Feedback is a clever construction with plenty of what sounds like live drumming, up against a mesh of sounds and grooves underpinned by a huge sub bassline that sounds better the louder it goes. All in all, this is a very decent effort, with some stellar highpoints going on. Soul Vibration doesn't make any claim to be a spiritual journey, and is best viewed as a collection of different styles than a continued meditation across a theme. That said, if you can't shag to this then I suggest you see a doctor."

"Label DJ Liquid Djems is A/R boss on the chill/elecronica side of Liquid Records and has recently compiled and released the first in a series of up-beat chill compilations called 'soul vibration #001' - a unique fusion of organic electronica and deep pulsating psy dub n breaks. Although working mostly on the more up-beat chill side of things James is also known to rock a dance floor.....playing a more intelligent mix of rolling full spectrum psychedelic breaks fused with phatt and funky psy trance. . . guaranteed to rip up the dance floor. Over the last seven years James has had international gigs in place like Egypt, Greece, France, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Central America and Turkey and has played at hundreds of events in the UK including Glastonbury fesitival, Glade festival, Synergy project and Little Green Planet to name a few, alongside with some of the biggest names in the industry. With gigs already booked in Turkey, USA, South America, Japan, Ibiza and UK, 2006 is looking full power..." -- Liquid Djems (www.myspace.com/liquiddjems)
