Her music falls between the orchestratedrnmeditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics ofrnJoni Mitchell. In addition to reviving thernsinger/songwriter traditions of the \'70s, Amos revived thernpiano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album,rnLittle Earthquakes, Amos built a dedicated following thatrncontinued to expand with her second album, Under the Pink.rnrnBorn in North Carolina but raised in Maryland, Amos wasrnthe daughter of a Methodist preacher. By the age of four, rnshe was singing and playing piano in the church choir; shernbegan writing her own songs shortly afterward. Amos won arnscholarship to Baltimore\'s Peabody Conservatory based onrnher instrumental prowess. While she was studying atrnPeabody, she became infatuated with rock & roll, rnparticularly the music of Led Zeppelin. She began writingrnpop ballads and performing in local bars. Amos moved tornLos Angeles in her late teens to become a pop singer.rnrnAtlantic Records signed her in 1987, recording anrnuninspired pop-metal album called Y Kant Tori Read thernfollowing year. The record was a complete failure, rnattracting no attention from radio or press and sellingrnvery few copies; nevertheless, she didn\'t lose her recordrncontract. By 1990, Amos had adopted a new approach, rnsinging spare, haunting, semiconfessional piano balladsrnthat were arranged like Kate Bush but had the melodies andrnlyrical approach of Joni Mitchell. Atlantic sponsored arntrip to England in 1991, where she played a series ofrnconcerts in support of an EP, Me and a Gun.rnrnThe harrowing "Me and a Gun" was an autobiographical song, rntelling the tale of Amos\' own experience with rape. Itrngained positive reviews throughout the media, and both thernEP and the concerts sold well. Little Earthquakes, Amos\'rnfirst album as a singer/songwriter, was released in latern1991 and sold well in both the U.S. and the U.K. In 1992,rnshe released the Crucify EP, which featured three covers, rnincluding Nirvana\'s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and LedrnZeppelin\'s "Thank You." Delivered in early 1994, Under thernPink, the full-length follow-up to Little Earthquakes, wasrna bigger hit, selling over a million copies and launchingrnthe minor hit singles "God" and "Cornflake Girl." Twornyears later, Amos delivered her third album, Boys forrnPele, her most ambitious and difficult record to date. Thernalbum debuted at number two and quickly went platinum.rnAmos spent much of 1997 dealing with personal matters, rnincluding a miscarriage and a marriage, and working on herrnfourth album, From the Choirgirl Hotel, which was releasedrnin the spring of 1998. The two-disc To Venus and Backrnfollowed in 1999 to coincide with a tour with AlanisrnMorissette. In 2001, Amos returned with the covers albumrnStrange Little Girls, which also marked her last releasernfor Atlantic. The next year, she found a new label homernwith Epic and followed with Scarlet\'s Walk in October. Herrneighth studio album, an autobiographical record titled ThernBeekeeper, was released in 2005.
