Released in 1999 as the follow-up to Public, Emm Gryner's brilliant major-label debut, Science Fair was the first release on her newly formed Dead Daisy Records shortly after she parted company with Mercury Records. Intended as an experiment to try doing it all herself, Science Fair was recorded, engineered, and produced by Gryner over a 17-day period in the spring of 1999. Locations reportedly included a rented cottage on Lake Huron, the bedroom of her Toronto apartment, the music department of an Ontario University and her brother's Hollywood living room. The result is an impressive effort that sheds the full-blown studio production so evident on Public and presents itself as a more intimate listening experience. The songs are beautifully crafted, the recording simple and clear, and Gryner's voice is as mesmerizing as ever. An album such as this could be quite tedious in the absence of heavy production values, but Science Fair has substance and succeeds in every way by relying on beautiful melodies, skillful musicianship, and the heartfelt performances of a remarkably gifted young artist.
4 Stars & AMG Album Pick
After parting ways with her major label, Emm Gryner released Science Fair which Eye Magazine called the best album of her career. Ron Sexsmith said Stereochrome is one of "the most beautiful melodies I've heard" and Nelly Furtado named Science Fair among her Top 5 favourites in a recent VH1 interview. Science Fair catapulted Emm and her indie label Dead Daisy Records back into the spotlight just long enough for legendary rock icon David Bowie to notice, inviting her to join his touring band. Emm, just 24, accepted and soon was performing at Wembley Stadium, on Saturday Night Live, David Letterman and a host of other famous venues. Emm also appears on Bowie At the Beeb, a live CD released in 2000.
Anchored by the deep resonance of her bass-playing and buoyed by her grace on piano, as well as guitar and keyboard, this recording may have begun as a musical lab. test and ended up a success.
"Science Fair - from the onset - was always intended to be an experiment - to record with no expectations - and to see if I could complete it almost all on my own and be happy with the outcome. I've been inspired by all sorts of music this past 12 months, records by people like Nick Drake, Mercury Rev, Sonic Youth, Beck, Mazzy Star, Transistor Sound and Lighting Co., Creeper Lagoon and Ron Sexsmith have all driven me to create like mad this year."
