After a few years and a series of demos, the band has hooked up with Retribute Records to unleash their own brand of Doom Metal, channelled on to plastic in the form of "Drawing Down The Sun". Having not heard the older demos, I can\'t compare and comment on the band\'s progress, but I can say this: "Drawing Down The Sun" is a damn fine recording that won\'t disappoint aficionados of this slower side of Metal.rnrnThese guitars are huge. They\'re fuzzed out, low rumbling, droning on and on with riffs that sweat melancholy. The real appeal of THE RIVER\'s sound, however, comes from vocalist Vicky, whose smooth singing provides an incredible contrast from the earthquake below. There isn\'t really a whole lot on this album - not many songwriting dynamics, solos, or experiments - but the two dimensions of female vocals and deep, roaring riffs combine to make for a wonderfully oppressive experience. The music drudges forward darkly while the vocals act as a beacon of light guiding your way. Being lost in the dark has never been so much fun.rnrnWhile this will appeal to fans of traditional Doom Metal, I also see it tickling the fancy of fans of more romantic bands like KATATONIA or MY DYING BRIDE. Really, THE RIVER are the kind of band that will be appreciated by any fans of slow, sombre music with a tinge of angelic beauty.
