but now tortuously rntemporally distant - studio album (now 11 years on, rnthey are finally readying another). plastic green rnhead proved that this band, given their steady eye on rnquality and an attendant defiance at the pressures of rntime and the travails of the business, could do no rnwrong.s rnin fact, they have done no wrong. as leif edling, on rnlive in stockholm, so knowledgably acknowledges, the rnbands tight catalogue of six studio albums is a rncanon beyond reproach. fortunately for the viewer, rnedling gets the band to talk intelligently and at rnlength about each and every one of these records rn(erics recollections of writing the skull are rnparticularly poignant), as well as early influences rnand plans for the future, which included, at the time rnof the talk, the dvd at hand, an acoustic ep, and the rnbands long-awaited new studio album. rnand if theres any cause to doubt the bands mastery rncome that new record, the root reason for this dvd to rnexist should explode those doubts like so much acrid rngunpowder. live in stockholm, unsurprisingly, rncaptures the band live in stockholm, delivering an rninsanely hi-fidelity set in front of 700 discerning rnand demanding doom fans. the bands current lineup rn(and the one that set down in sweden that fateful rnday), is frightening when witnessed in a live rnsetting. joining eric, bruce and rick, is returning, rnoriginal drummer jeff oly olsen and on bass, rnlongtime trouble compatriot chuck robinson. chuck rnjoined the trouble camp over a decade ago as bruce rnand ricks guitar tech and now holds the legendary rnbottom end like no fat-stringer that came before. rnindeed, preparations for the show saw chuck rnrehearsing, sometimes two times a day, with olsen, rnjust to get the crucial drum and bass rhythm section rnduality crushingly perfect. this all took place at rnerics house and summarily drove him crazy, but rnthats a story for another time rnthe blood and sweat of chucks and olys toil, along rnwith the jubilant caterwaul of what happens when rneric, bruce and rick join the coven (cigarettes and rnflying vs mandatory), can be heard as the band rncarves deep grooves through classics like r.i.p., rnrun to the light, come touch the sky, fear and rnpsychotic reaction, along with shocking rarities rnlike the skull and vengeful closer the tempter. rnelsewhere, the misery shows (act ii) and memorys rngarden demonstrate troubles near scientific ability rnto harness all that electricity and deliver rnclaustrophobic eulogies with somber efficiency. eric rnis resplendent and untouchably cool in his shades, rnbruce looks like a time-traveler from san francisco rncirca 69, and the others are all business, laying rndown the grim metal magic with the precision and heft rnone has come to expect from troubles very rnexpensive-sounding show. rnultimately, live in stockholm is irrefutably proof, rnas if any was needed, that trouble exist in a sort of rnmetal music void, away from trend, away from concern rnfor the business, away from timelines, away from any rnsort of influence save for the complex tangle of rninspirations osmosed and injested in the early 70s rnas troubled kids in a troubled america. live in rnstockholm is, quite possibly, a capable capture of rnone of rocks greatest live bands operating at near rnpeak condition. it is certainly a recording that rncaptures the greatest lineup the band has ever put on rnoffer, and it is certainly a celebration of all that rncan be crushing and torridly emotional about metal rnmusic. bathing yourself in its light will certainly rnbe your salvation from those who pose and oppose. rnhttp://newtrouble.com/ rnenjoy and support the artist.
