Torrent Description
BBC Private Life of a Christmas/Easter MasterpiecernrnPieter Bruegel is the attached release.rnrnSchedule for releases:rnThe Annunciation by Jan van Eyck: 29th June, 2007rnCensus At Bethlehem by Pieter Bruegel: 1st July, 2007rnTamari No Atua (God\'s Child) by Paul Gauguin: 3rd July, 2007rnChrist of St John of the Cross by Salvador Dali: 5th July, 2007rnThe Resurrection by Piero della Francesca: 7th July, 2007rnrnPrivate Life Of A Christmas Masterpiece takes an in-depth look at three of the key pieces of religious art rnrnrelating to Christmas.rnrnThe Annunciation by Jan van Eyckrn"And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God". The latest addition to this superb rnrnseries looks in detail at Jan van Eyck\'s depiction of a defining moment of Christianity. Painted in Bruges in 1435, it rnrnshows Mary with her hands raised in incredulity and worship. Beside her, a vase of lilies symbolises her purity; above rnrnher, the dove of the Holy Spirit bathes in a radiance created by real gold. rnrnThe painting disappeared for 400 years; it re-emerged in Russia, where it narrowly escaped destruction when it was rnrntransferred from its oak panel on to canvas, and eventually Stalin sold it to an American millionaire for hard currency. rnrnThere is no better treatment of great art than this series - none more focused, absorbing or informative - to be found rnrnanywhere on television. rnrnCensus At Bethlehem by Pieter BruegelrnLike a single frame of a film, Pieter Breughel\'s Census at Bethlehem shows the Holy Family arriving in Bethlehem, rnrnsurrounded by the mundane world of 16th-century Flanders. Dozens of ordinary people are going about their business, rnrnoblivious to the miracle taking place in their midst. Anyone looking at the painting has to search to see Mary and rnrnJoseph: Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, calls it a sophisticated version of Where\'s Wally. This is a rnrnmagnificent programme, unpretentious about a timeless image of Christmas - a world filled with suffering and rnrndisplacement - which has redemption at its heart. rnrnTamari No Atua (God\'s Child) by Paul Gauguin. rn"And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes. In a radical re-imagining of the familiar rnrnnativity scene, Paul Gauguin\'s masterpiece, Te Tamari No Atua (Nativity), portrays the Madonna lying exhausted on a rnrnbed: blunt- featured, dark-skinned and stocky, easily recognisable to everyone on Tahiti as Gauguin\'s 14-year-old rnrnpregnant mistress. The painting found no buyer and received no favourable review during the artist\'s lifetime. The Nazis rnrnlater condemned Gauguin "with his combination of the sacred, the profane and the profoundly mysterious" as rnrndegenerate. This unmissable programme - a masterpiece of informed and self-effacing television - describes the meeting rnrnof cultures that produced one of the central images for our times. rnrnTechnical SpecsrnVideo Codec: XviDrnVideo Bitrate: 1669 kbpsrnVideo Resolution: 704x400rnVideo Aspect Ratio: 1.760:1rnAudio Codec: MP3rnAudio BitRate: 132 kbpsrnAudio Streams: 1rnAudio Languages: EnglishrnRunTime Per Part: 49 minsrnNumber Of Parts: 3rnPart Size: 639mbrnSubtitles: No - TV CaprnCapped by: Adam CookrnReleased by: DentjernrnrnPrivate Life Of An Easter Masterpiece takes an in-depth look at key pieces of religious art relating to rnrnEaster.rnrnChrist of St John of the Cross by Salvador DalirnThis extraordinary crucifiction scene - inspired by a weird mix of Spanish mysticism and nuclear physics - is often rnrncalled the 20th century\'s greatest religious painting. Yet the artist was a notorious blasphemer whose work had rnrnprovoked outrage in the Catholic Church.rnrnSalvador Dali\'s Christ of St John of the Cross excited controversy from the moment it appeared. The artist has been rnrndenounced as a tasteless joker, and many artists and critics continue to despise a painting they call \'vulgar\' and rnrn\'kitsch\'. rnrnThis documentary describes how Dali set about creating a synthesis of Catholic mysticism and nuclear physics, rnrnand how he suspended a Hollywood actor from the ceiling as a model and employed a quantity surveyor to work out the rnrnperspective. \' What\'s so good about the picture,\' says Neil MacGregor, the director of the British Museum, \'is that "in rnrnevery way" it is impossible.\' And whether you admire the painting or not, here is an accomplished documentary about it. rnrnThe Resurrection by Piero della FrancescarnA masterpiece of composition, Francesca\'s widely admired painting depicts the risen Christ - wearing the expression of rnrn"a study steveadore", as one art critic put it - while beneath him the guards slumber. rnrnThe last of this superb series focuses on Piero della Francesca\'s The Resurrection, described by Kenneth Clark as \'one rnrnof the supreme works of painting\' and by Aldous Huxley as \'the greatest picture in the world\'. (A child being taught in an rnrnart class is filmed asking innocently if Huxley had seen all the pictures in the world.) The figure of Christ stares out with rnrnmesmerising eyes while the guards sleep beneath, creating an extraordinary sense of quiet and stillness. Yet this rnrnmasterpiece so fell out of favour in the 18th century that it was plastered over, and again was nearly destroyed in the rnrnSecond World War before a British officer remembered Huxley\'s quote and stopped the bombardment of Sansepolcro. rnrnIn describing the technique, drama and significance of paintings in an informed and entertaining way, this Private Lives rnrnseries cannot be bettered. rnrnTechnical SpecsrnVideo Codec: XviDrnVideo Bitrate: 1451 kbpsrnVideo Resolution: 624x352rnVideo Aspect Ratio: 1.773:1rnAudio Codec: MP3rnAudio BitRate: 132 kbpsrnAudio Streams: 1rnAudio Languages: EnglishrnRunTime Per Part: 49 minsrnNumber Of Parts: 2rnPart Size: 560mbrnSubtitles: No - TV CaprnCapped by Adam CookrnReleased by Dentje
