Cromlech 02:10 rnTotal playing time 44:33rnrnBitrate: 256 CBRrnrnReview by Matthias Noll of chroniclesofchaos.com (8/10)rnCombine the droning Burzum or Darkthrone approach with extremely deep and brutal yet natural sounding death metal vocals; put them on top of repetitive, dissonant guitar work that sometimes sounds like black metallized Morbid Angel riffs; add an extremely linear, machine-like rhythmic backbone; and you get to the core of what Ukranian NSBM act Hate Forest is about these days. Although the vocals sometimes change to a screechier style, their mostly guttural delivery and the fact that most of the riffs might have more in common with death than black metal might put off the purists, it is the actual execution and delivery of Hate Forest\'s material that firmly places them in the black metal category. Rather than bringing up images of nebulah hordes or infernal fields, this music drills mercilessly into your skull and resembles a festering, infected wound which keeps pulsing endlessly, sometimes in synch with one\'s increased heartbeat, sometimes faster, but always there and always hurting until it becomes a masochistic desire to feel the pain. In my opinion Hate Forest have not found a sound that is completely appropriate to their music yet, their guitar tones could be stronger, and they have a tendency to sound a bit thin, tinny and mechanical; but as soon as the pitch-black atmosphere has grabbed you by the throat, the doors to cavernous crypts of eternal torture are open wide. Ukrainska narodna 02:00 rn6. Glare Over Slavonic Lands 10:18 rn7. Keening 02:45 rnTotal playing time 37:48rnrnBitrate: 224 CBRrnrnReview by Pedro Azevedo of chroniclesofchaos.com (8/10)rnFollowing up last year\'s impressive _Purity_ with _Battlefields_, Ukrainians Hate Forest have tweaked their approach somewhat: the sound is less trebly, the fast sections are less frequent, and the droning feel of its predecessor has become more prevalent. Furthermore, an increase in militaristic and ethnic elements has also occurred. The latter is caused mostly by the Ukrainian folk singing between tracks -- which I began to skip right after the first listen. As a result of the above, _Battlefields_ is considerably less intense than _Purity_, opting instead for a more ponderous approach. The black metal guitar sound is still complemented mostly by death vocals; however, the main reason why it is hard to classify _Battlefields_ as black metal is that the compositions tend to stay away of what one might expect from said genre. There is a lot of quietly memorable material imbued in _Battlefields_, and its doomy, sombre nature works in its favour -- much like it did for _Purity_ in spite of the different approach. The militaristic cadence of some of the percussion and riffing becomes somewhat excessive at times, however, and overall I tend to find _Purity_ a slightly better proposition. Also, if you take away the folk chanting, all you have left is three ten minute tracks, which may be a deterrent to some. There is still plenty of merit in _Battlefields_ though, and its unrelentingly dark soundscapes are greatly helped by some excellent riffs, their bleakness complemented by the death vocals (which is especially true of the superb final track). In fact, overall _Battlefields_ proves to be a worthy follow-up to _Purity_ for the most part; shame about the excessive militaristic leanings. (article submitted 19/6/2004)rnrnResistance [EP] (2004)rnrnTracklist:rn1. Annihilation 03:23 rn2. The Wood Brothers 04:38 rnTotal playing time 08:01rnrnBitrate: 192 CBRrnrnSorrow (2005)rnrnThe songs end as if they experienced a blackout whilst in the midst of recording. This is intentional.rnrnTracklist:rn1. Cold of the Grave 03:55 rn2. Fullmoon 05:32 rn3. What the Ruins Remember 05:18 rn4. Fog 04:19 rn5. As the Sunlight Dies 04:02 rn6. Night Harvest 04:30 rn7. Chambers of the Winds 04:20 rnTotal playing time 31:56rnrnBitrate: 240 avg. VBRrnrnReview by Quentin Kalis of chroniclesofchaos.com (9/10)rnFirst, the bad news: this is reportedly the last Hate Forest album ever. Although I will miss what is arguably one of the best black metal bands of today, it is always better to go out when on top than to do an Amorphis or Paradise Lost, releasing album after album, each subsequent one significantly weaker than its predecessor.rnrnAll the key aspects that made _Sorrow_\'s predecessor _Purity_ such a devastatingly brilliant album are intact: the cold riffs, supported by ferocious drumming, and the inhumane growls that would ordinarily be regarded as more appropriate for a death metal band. There are some subtle changes; for example, the bass is a lot more prominent. All the cliché black metal descriptions seem to be eerily accurate as a description for the music -- this is indeed cold, hateful and evil music. The most striking aspect (and indeed the most annoying) is that the songs end as if they experienced a blackout whilst in the midst of recording. While the fade outs and ominous ambient segues used to great effect on _Purity_ created a sense of seamless continuity between the songs, this approach accomplishes the exact opposite and gives the impression of unnecessarily amateurism. If this aspect won\'t bother you, then add one point onto the score above, because other than this, I can find little to fault this CD -- the latest in a long line of releases to suggest that black metal\'s central base has moved to the east.
